Do we like KPMG?
Global audit, tax and advisory network of member firms; KPMG International is headquartered in London.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Big and capable, but a long record of regulator fines over weak audits and exam cheating. We'd be wary and want to see sustained improvement first.
KPMG is one of the Big Four accountancy networks. It's a network of member firms owned by their partners, so there are no outside shareholders. Gary Wingrove, a former head of KPMG Australia, took over as global chairman and CEO on 1 October 2026 from Bill Thomas, who had led since 2017.
The audit record is the big worry. The UK's Financial Reporting Council fined KPMG a record £21m over its Carillion audit. Separately, KPMG was fined £14.4m after admitting it gave false and misleading information to its regulator during spot checks.
There's also the exam cheating saga. In 2024 the US audit watchdog, the PCAOB, fined KPMG's Dutch arm US$25m, the largest penalty in its history, over exam cheating.
Our score is middling to low. Audits are supposed to be the safeguard for investors, and a repeated run of fines and admitted misleading of regulators is hard to look past. A new boss could help, but we'd want to see results first.
