Do we like Kirin?
Japanese brewer, soft drinks, health science and pharma group (Kirin Ichiban, Blackmores, FANCL), based in Tokyo.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A big, mostly respectable Japanese brewer. Its Myanmar military-partner mistake was costly, and it did leave. We'd back it, with some reservations.
Kirin is a large Japanese group, listed in Tokyo, that makes beer and soft drinks. It has also moved into health products, buying Australia's Blackmores in 2023 and taking control of FANCL after a 2024 tender offer.
The big drama was Myanmar. Kirin co-owned Myanmar Brewery and Mandalay Brewery with Myanmar Economic Holdings (MEHL), a military-linked conglomerate. Rights groups including Amnesty and Human Rights Watch pressed it to cut ties.
After the military coup on 1 February 2021, Kirin said it would end the partnership. MEHL then asked a Yangon court to liquidate Myanmar Brewery, and Kirin went to arbitration in Singapore. Our searches didn't show how that finished.
Per a January 2026 company notice, Yoshinori Isozaki is CEO and Takeshi Minakata is President & COO. We'd give it a middling-to-decent score: it eventually did the right thing, but the earlier Myanmar tie-up counts against it.
