Do we like ING?
Dutch bank (ING Groep) offering retail, direct and wholesale banking, headquartered in Amsterdam.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It is a big mainstream bank with a record money-laundering settlement behind it and ongoing climate criticism. It has also tightened its fossil fuel policies.
ING is one of the Netherlands' biggest banks, a listed company with no single owner. Steven van Rijswijk is its CEO, and the sources we found list him in that job in 2026. He was previously chief risk officer.
The big stain is 2018. Dutch prosecutors said ING had broken anti-money-laundering law for years, with weak checks and monitoring from 2010 to 2016. ING accepted a €775m settlement and said it took full responsibility.
On climate, ING said it would stop financing new oil and gas projects and later halted general financing to pure-play upstream companies. Campaigners gave a mixed response.
Not everyone is convinced. Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands) threatened to take ING to court over its climate policy. A SOMO report put its fossil lending at €26.4bn, but ING's CEO dismissed that as nonsense. So we land in the middle.
