Do we like Grill'd?
Australian 'healthy burger' restaurant chain, about 174 restaurants, now also selling patties in Coles. Based in Melbourne.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Popular and good at marketing, but it has a record of pay disputes with staff. We'd think twice before backing them.
Grill'd was founded by Simon Crowe and has grown into a chain of about 174 restaurants. In 2025 it launched its first supermarket range, with burger patties sold only at Coles.
It tried to lean into plant-based food, aiming for half its menu to be plant-based. In 2022 it backed down on a plant-based-only restaurant venture.
The pay record is the sore spot. In 2015 the Fair Work Commission ruled that an old WorkChoices-era pay deal caused serious underpayment. In 2019 the Fair Work Ombudsman looked into its traineeship program, and Grill'd rejected claims it used the program to underpay young workers.
More recently, a union site reported that the Fair Work Commission threw out Grill'd's proposed enterprise agreement, which offered a 1% pay rise and flat-dollar penalty rates. That's why we land in the middle.
