Do we like Great Wall Motors?
Chinese carmaker (GWM) making SUVs, pickups and EVs under Haval, Tank, Ora and Wey brands; based in Baoding, China.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, growing carmaker with a loud streak, but our searches found little on its labour, tax or environmental record. We'd hold off until we know more.
Great Wall Motor (GWM) is a Chinese carmaker from Baoding. Chairman Wei Jianjun is a well-known blunt speaker. In February 2026 he warned that Chinese automakers still lag the top global carmakers, and that exports lean heavily on price.
It's going global fast. Gasgoo reports overseas shipments are now about half of its volume, and it aims to sell over a million vehicles overseas by 2030. Its European plan includes a regional plant.
The big drama is its public fight with BYD. In 2023 GWM complained to Chinese regulators that some BYD hybrids exceeded pollution limits. BYD disputed this and said GWM's tests weren't independent. In 2025 Geely backed GWM's claims, and the authorities set up a joint investigation.
We didn't find fines, worker scandals or privacy cases against GWM, but we also found little on its labour, tax or climate record. So we give a middling score until we know more.
