Do we like Grab Philippines?
Ride-hailing, food delivery and payments super-app; local arm of Singapore-based Grab Holdings.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Useful and widely used, but it has a record of regulator fines in the Philippines. Our searches found nothing recent, so we're sitting in the middle.
Grab started as a Malaysian taxi-booking app and spread across Southeast Asia. Co-founder Anthony Tan is CEO. GrabTaxi reached the Philippines in 2013, and food delivery came in 2018, according to the sources we found. Those sources were patchy, though.
In 2017 the LTFRB, the Philippine transport regulator, fined Grab and Uber P5 million each for taking on unaccredited drivers. Grab said it would pay the fine itself and not pass it on to drivers or riders.
In 2018 the LTFRB fined Grab P10 million over a P2-per-minute charge and ordered refunds to riders. Grab appealed. A 2023 Philstar opinion column said the fine still hadn't been collected, but that is the columnist's view.
The Philippine Competition Commission also fined Grab P9 million. The Inquirer headline says it was fined again. The PCC said Grab broke its pricing and refund commitments. We found nothing recent, so we give it a middle score.
