Do we like Grab?
Southeast Asian 'super app' for ride-hailing, food delivery and payments, based in Singapore.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Useful and now profit-focused, but it has a long record of regulator fights over fares and driver terms. We'd hold back until the gig-worker treatment looks clearer.
Grab started in Southeast Asia and grew into a ride-hailing, delivery and payments giant. Co-founder Anthony Tan is still Group CEO and chairman, according to GlobalData and Simply Wall St. In early 2026 it shifted focus toward profit growth over rapid expansion.
Regulators have repeatedly clashed with it. Indonesia's competition watchdog fined Grab and its partner TPI in 2020 over favouring certain drivers, and Grab said it would appeal. The search summary says a later court ruling cancelled that case.
In Malaysia the competition commission proposed an RM86.77 million fine over alleged restrictive clauses on drivers. In 2023 the High Court set it aside, saying the process was tainted with procedural impropriety and breach of natural justice. So the fine never stuck, and the court didn't rule on the underlying conduct.
Our searches turned up little recent, solid reporting on how it treats drivers today, so we're sitting in the middle at 5.
