Do we like Goop?
Wellness, beauty, fashion and lifestyle brand and media site founded by Gwyneth Paltrow, based in Los Angeles, US.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Not one we'd put money into. The pseudoscience health-claims settlement and the shaky finances outweigh a lively brand with few proven harms.
Goop is Gwyneth Paltrow's wellness and lifestyle empire. It sells beauty, fashion, food and advice. It raised $50m in 2018 at a valuation of around $250m, according to Fortune and PYMNTS.
Its biggest scandal came in 2018. Prosecutors in California sued over claims for its vaginal eggs and a flower essence blend. Goop paid $145,000 in civil penalties and agreed to refund customers. It didn't admit wrongdoing, and the settlement bars it from making health claims without scientific evidence.
More recently the company has looked wobbly. A Pajiba piece citing Puck said the food side is doing well while fashion and beauty struggle. Puck also reported that it still isn't profitable. Grazia reported redundancies, and a trade report said its UK arm was threatened with strike-off for not filing accounts.
So we give it a middling-to-low score. It's a well-known brand with real fans. But the health-claims record and the instability mean we wouldn't put money in.
