Do we like Golden Gaytime (Streets)?
Toffee-and-biscuit-crumb ice cream from Streets, an Australian ice cream brand now part of Magnum Ice Cream Company.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A much-loved Aussie treat. The owner has a mixed record, with old palm oil criticism and fresh governance rows. We'd back it only cautiously.
Golden Gaytime is Streets' famous ice cream. Streets says Gaytime was first made in 1959 and Golden Gaytime arrived in 1970. Streets sits in Australia and New Zealand under the Heartbrand umbrella of The Magnum Ice Cream Company.
The owner was spun out of Unilever as a separate company. Peter ter Kulve, who joined Unilever ice cream in 1988, was named its CEO and stayed on to lead it once independent, according to trade press.
The drama is mostly at group level. Reuters-sourced reports say a group of Magnum investors criticised how the company is handling Ben & Jerry's and asked for more transparency. Campaigners also targeted the group's palm oil sourcing, though those pages are older.
Our score is 5. We like the brand, but we found little proof of the owner doing good, and some governance and sourcing worries hang over it. A middling mark.
