Do we like Geely?
Chinese carmaker group (Geely Auto, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus stakes), based in Hangzhou.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, fast-growing carmaker with a real push into EVs, but battery recalls this year and a quality-vs-speed tension keep us at mixed. We'd hold off for now.
Geely is the Hangzhou-based group built by founder Li Shufu. It now spans Geely Auto, Zeekr and Polestar, and it's the parent of Volvo Cars. In August 2026 Li stepped down as chairman of the listed Geely Automobile, but he stays chairman of the parent group.
An Conghui took over at Geely Auto. Li said the change was meant to build a more professional management team. The parent group still holds about 36.6% of Geely Automobile, so Li keeps plenty of sway.
The recalls are the messy part. Volvo recalled EX30s globally over batteries from Sunwoda, and Zeekr is recalling about 38,000 001 WE cars. That followed Geely's legal fight with Sunwoda, which ended in a settlement. Polestar also recalled 1,473 Polestar 4s in China over a thermal runaway risk.
On the plus side, Li has spoken out against price wars and against rushed, low-cost manufacturing. Even so, Geely has raised its 2026 export target sharply. Overall we see a mixed picture, not one to rush into.
