Do we like GCash?
Philippine mobile wallet and payments app run by Mynt (formerly Globe Fintech Innovations), based in Taguig, Philippines.
Our score: 6 out of 10. Widely used and a real help to financial inclusion in the Philippines, but it has had a system error and gambling-link trouble with the regulator. We'd back it with some caution.
GCash is the app behind a lot of everyday Philippine payments. It's run by Mynt, formed in 2015 with Globe and Ant Group. Martha Sazon has been CEO since 2020. She told Fortune the app has about 90 million registered users, with about 40 million active each month.
Ownership is a mix of big names. Globe and Ant Group hold close to 70% between them. MUFG Bank bought about 8% in 2024, at a reported $5 billion valuation. Mynt is now reportedly planning a large Philippine IPO, with selling shareholders including Ant Group and Warburg Pincus.
The drama is mostly about regulators. The BSP told e-wallets to remove in-app links to online gambling sites. Analysts said that could hurt earnings. Globe's CEO said GCash had removed the links by mid-August 2025. GCash later said there was no material impact on revenue.
There was also a reconciliation error that caused unauthorised deductions from accounts, and the BSP said it would look into it further. We didn't see a fine in what we found. Mynt's 2025 earnings contribution to Globe rose 64% to P6.1 billion. On balance we think it is decent but not spotless: 6 out of 10.
