Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It runs real programs for garment workers and has set emissions targets, but its record is thin on recent independent checks. It's a fast-fashion-style supply chain, and Old Navy and Athleta are struggling.

Gap is the big American clothing group behind Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta as well as the Gap brand. Richard Dickson, the ex-Mattel executive known for reviving Barbie, took over as CEO in August 2023 after a spell with interim leadership.

The old dirt: in 2002 Gap and other US retailers settled a class-action lawsuit over wage and workers' rights at garment factories on Saipan, per Reuters. That's a long time ago, and the search didn't turn up newer fines or court cases.

On the good side, Gap's P.A.C.E. programme has trained female garment workers since 2007. Its 2025 report says about 85% of strategic factories take part in RISE or P.A.C.E. Workplace. It also cites SBTi-approved 2030 emissions targets. These are summaries of Gap's own reporting, so we'd take them with a pinch of salt.

As a business, it's patchy. Per the Q2 2026 call summary, the Gap brand is booming, Banana Republic is up a bit, Old Navy is slipping and Athleta is still in turnaround. Tariffs keep shifting. Fine to like, but nothing here makes us want to rush to back them.
