Do we like Fitbit?
Fitness trackers and smartwatches plus a health app; a Google brand based in California, US, being folded into Google Health.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. Fitbit makes useful, popular trackers, but it was fined over burn-hazard reporting and sits inside Google's data empire. We'd back it only cautiously.
Fitbit was founded by James Park and became one of the best-known fitness tracker brands. Google bought it, and the search results from that era put Park as co-founder and CEO.
The big black mark is the Ionic smartwatch. In 2022 Fitbit recalled about 1 million of them after reports of the battery overheating. Regulators counted 78 reports of burn injuries in the US.
In January 2025 Fitbit agreed to pay a $12.25 million penalty to settle US Consumer Product Safety Commission claims that it was slow to report the defect. It didn't admit the allegations.
The brand is changing. Reports say the Fitbit app is being rebranded as Google Health. Google also launched the screenless Fitbit Air in May 2026 and the Fitbit Edge in October 2026.
