Do we like Expedia?

Online travel booking group (Expedia, Hotels.com, Vrbo, Orbitz) based in Seattle, USA.

Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, mainstream travel booker with no huge recent scandal, but the searches turned up little good beyond that and a past data-breach settlement. We'd hold off.

Expedia is one of the world's biggest online travel companies. It's based in Seattle. Barry Diller has been chairman since 2002, when IAC took a controlling stake. The company was spun off in 2005.

Ariane Gorin took over as CEO on May 13, 2024, after Peter Kern. Diller stayed on as chairman and senior executive.

The main drama we found is a data breach. In 2019 Orbitz and Expedia agreed to pay $110,000 to settle a Pennsylvania investigation into a 2018 breach. The state alleged Orbitz misrepresented how it protected customer data.

Years earlier, in 2009, Expedia settled a Seattle class action over its service fees. It denied the allegations. It's old news, and our searches found nothing more recent. That leaves us at a middling 5.
