Do we like Etsy?
Online marketplace for handmade, vintage and craft goods, run from the US (Brooklyn, New York).
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. We like the small-seller idea, but there is a history of seller anger over fees and of IP and counterfeit claims. Our search turned up little recent evidence either way.
Etsy is the go-to online marketplace for handmade, vintage and craft goods. In late 2025 it announced that insider Kruti Patel Goyal, who had been president and chief growth officer, would take over as CEO from Josh Silverman on January 1, 2026. Silverman moved to executive chair.
The big seller drama was in 2022, under Silverman. After a fee increase, sellers went on strike. A business and human rights site reported more than 12,000 sellers protesting what they called degraded business changes. It showed how much sellers depend on the platform.
There's also the counterfeit issue. Back in 2015, investors brought a class action claiming Etsy hadn't been fully open about how much IP-infringing material was on the site. That's an accusation in a lawsuit. It isn't a finding, but it's a theme worth watching.
In 2026 the news is mostly business. Depop is treated as a discontinued operation, with a reported sale to eBay and UK clearance. Etsy is adding AI and seller tools, and a Google agentic-commerce tie-up. We found no fresh fines or scandals, so we score it in the middle.
