Do we like eBay?
Online marketplace where people and businesses buy and sell new and used goods, based in San Jose, California
Our score: 6 out of 10. We'd back it with some caution. It runs a genuinely useful resale marketplace with real green credentials. But it has a nasty harassment scandal on its record and an unresolved US government case over illegal products.
eBay is the original online marketplace. It's built on people reselling pre-owned stuff, and it says about 40% of its sales volume is recommerce. Jamie Iannone has been CEO since April 2020, and he used to work at eBay and Walmart.
The ugly part is the Steiner case. Former eBay employees were accused of a harassment campaign against a couple who ran a newsletter about eBay. It included death threats and a bloody pig mask. In July 2026 the case settled for about $48.7m, plus charitable commitments and a public statement from eBay.
The US Justice Department and EPA sued in 2023. They accused eBay of letting more than 343,000 emissions-defeat devices and thousands of illegal pesticides be sold. eBay said it blocks over 99.9% of such listings. A judge dismissed the suit on Section 230 grounds in 2024, and the DOJ appealed.
On the green side, eBay says it ran on 100% renewable energy in 2025. It says recommerce avoided 1.6m tonnes of carbon, and it has a net-zero-by-2045 plan. Those numbers come from eBay itself. Overall we'd say solid but not spotless, so 6 out of 10.
