Do we like Dropbox?
Cloud file storage, sync and document tools (plus Dash AI search); based in San Francisco, US.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A useful, mature product with no huge scandals in our results, but a 2024 breach lawsuit, past penalties and repeated layoffs. We'd back them only cautiously.
Dropbox is the cloud storage firm run by co-founder Drew Houston. Over the years it has shifted from simple file syncing towards document tools and an AI search product called Dash.
In April 2023 it cut about 500 jobs, roughly 16% of staff. Then in October 2024 it announced another 20% cut, about 528 people. Houston said it was over-invested in some areas and pushing towards AI.
In 2018 it settled with California prosecutors over auto-renewal practices. It paid $1.6 million in civil penalties and didn't admit liability.
After an April 2024 data breach, class actions were filed in California. A report says a federal judge ruled the plaintiffs must arbitrate. We couldn't confirm the details. That's the main reason we're stuck at the middle.
