Do we like Doritos?
Flavoured tortilla chips brand made by Frito-Lay, a PepsiCo division, based in Plano, Texas, USA
Our score: 4 out of 10. A hugely popular junk-food snack from a big corporation. It's moving slowly on dyes, faces privacy and labelling suits, and its parent has been criticised on plastic. We'd hold off.
Doritos is a PepsiCo brand, made by its Frito-Lay snack arm. Nacho Cheese Doritos has contained Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6, according to the reporting we found. That matters now that US health officials want artificial dyes gone.
Frito-Lay has launched Simply NKD Doritos, free of artificial dyes and flavours. The regular dyed versions stay on shelves for now. Reports differ on whether the regulatory deadline is the end of 2026 or 2027.
On privacy, a 2025 class action in California accuses Frito-Lay and PepsiCo of tracking visitors to sites like the Doritos one without consent. It says the cookie banners give a false sense of control. It's an accusation, and we didn't find a ruling.
Another 2025 suit in New York accuses PepsiCo and Frito-Lay of mislabelling Poppables as 'No Artificial Flavors'. Back in 2011, consumer groups filed an FTC complaint over Doritos marketing to teens. Campaign groups also say PepsiCo has backed off some packaging goals.
