Do we like Dell Technologies?
Makes PCs, servers, storage and AI infrastructure; based in Round Rock, Texas, USA.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A big, mostly ordinary hardware maker with real climate targets and a couple of old legal blots. We'd back it, but without much enthusiasm.
Dell is the Texas computer giant that Michael Dell built, and he's still the chairman and CEO. It sells PCs, servers and storage. These days the AI server boom is driving its growth. The search results didn't cover its founding story.
In Australia, Dell admitted that its website overstated discounts on add-on monitors. The Federal Court ordered a A$10 million penalty in 2023. The ACCC said over 5,300 monitors were sold with the overstated discounts. Dell said it was taking steps to improve its pricing processes.
In 2022 Dell agreed to pay $1 billion to settle a shareholder suit over its 2018 return to public trading. It paid in May 2023 after the Delaware court approved the deal. It also announced cuts of about 5% of its workforce in February 2023.
On climate, Dell has set a net zero goal for 2050 and a 50% cut to Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. Most of its footprint comes from customers using its products. One commentary piece asks whether AI server growth can fit with those goals. We give it a middling-good score.
