Do we like Dan Murphy's?
Australia's biggest liquor superstore chain, run by Endeavour Group (also BWS and pubs with pokies), based in Sydney.
Our score: 4 out of 10. A well-run, price-focused booze retailer, but its parent is Australia's biggest pokies operator and has been fined over it. We'd be wary of backing it.
Dan Murphy's is the big-box liquor chain people know. It's now part of Endeavour Group, which also owns BWS and hundreds of pubs. Endeavour was demerged from Woolworths and listed on the ASX in 2021, and it describes itself as Australia's largest retail drinks network and portfolio of licensed hotels.
The catch is the pubs. Shop Ethical! says Endeavour operates more than 12,000 poker machines. In 2023 the Victorian gambling regulator prosecuted its ALH arm, which was fined $550,000 for running 220 machines without the mandatory YourPlay limit-setting technology.
The boardroom has been messy. Executive chair Ari Mervis quit in August 2025, citing disagreements with the board, after CEO Steve Donohue left earlier that year. Ex-Virgin boss Jayne Hrdlicka took over as CEO in January 2026, and Tim Poole was named chair in February 2026.
Trading looks fine. Retail sales rose 3% in the latest quarter, helped by lower shelf prices at Dan Murphy's. Endeavour is also selling vineyards and closing a bottling plant, and The Nightly reported a $100m cost-cutting drive that could cost support-role jobs. Pokies plus booze is why we land below the middle.
