Do we like Country Road?
Australian fashion and homewares brand, part of Country Road Group (also Witchery, Mimco, Trenery, Politix), based in Melbourne.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. Its modern-slavery audits report no cases and it has cotton targets, but a harassment and bullying scandal and a weak run of trading count against it.
Country Road is a well-known Australian label. It now sits in Country Road Group with Witchery, Mimco, Trenery and Politix, owned by South Africa's Woolworths Holdings. Its sustainability pages say the group runs those five brands.
The past couple of years have been rough. A Sydney Morning Herald piece (republished on itiger) says sexual harassment and workplace bullying revelations rocked the fashion house, and that clothing sales and profit were falling. The group is leaning into homewares.
The parent is reshaping the group. A dailyinvestor article headlined 'end of an era' and Inside Retail both cover the changes. Woolworths Holdings has named Sam Ngumeni as group CEO, and has restructured its Australian operations. Reports also say the group had a big loss in 2024.
On supply chains, Ragtrader reports the group's ethical sourcing team reviewed 67 social compliance audits in FY24 and found no modern slavery cases. The group's own fabrics page aims for all cotton to be 'responsible cotton' by 2025. We haven't seen outside checks of that.
Our score is 5. It does the usual fashion-industry checks, but the workplace scandal and the messy turnaround leave us unsure. We'd wait and see.
