Do we like Converse?
Makes Chuck Taylor canvas sneakers and casual footwear; based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
Our score: 4 out of 10. A much-loved brand, but it sits inside Nike's supply chain, which has labour problems, and we found little proof of better pay. We'd hold off backing it.
Converse makes the Chuck Taylor canvas sneaker. Nike bought it in 2003 in a distress sale, so it's now one part of the Nike group.
Leadership has changed lately. Reports say Aaron Cain, who ran Nike's global men's business, has replaced Jared Carver as CEO. Nike boss Elliott Hill reportedly said he isn't interested in selling Converse. Sales have been declining.
On workers, the record is patchy. In 2011 an AP investigation prompted Converse to respond to abuse allegations at an Indonesian plant. Reports said many factories making Converse products fell short of Nike's own standards.
Wage cases followed in the US. Chavez v. Converse settled for $1.875m in 2020. In 2019 the Ninth Circuit let an employee's class claim over unpaid exit-inspection time go ahead. Fashion Checker found no public evidence that suppliers pay a living wage.
