Do we like Coinbase?

The largest US crypto exchange: trading, custody, staking, USDC stablecoin products and a business payments suite.

Our score: 4 out of 10. Mixed. It is a big, regulated and fairly open crypto platform. But it has had data breaches and spends heavily on politics, and crypto itself is risky. We'd be cautious.

Coinbase is the biggest US crypto exchange and is listed on Nasdaq. Brian Armstrong is co-founder and CEO. Lately it has expanded well beyond coin trading, into tokenized stocks, derivatives, stablecoin payments and bitcoin-backed mortgages.

The SEC sued it in 2023, accusing it of running an unregistered exchange and staking programme. The SEC dropped the case in February 2025. Armstrong said that involved no fine and no business changes. Some states kept going: New Jersey has only now revoked its staking order and $5M penalty.

Security is the sore spot. In May 2025 Coinbase said bribed overseas support contractors leaked data on 69,461 customers, including masked Social Security numbers and ID images. It refused a $20M ransom and estimated costs of up to $400M. In October 2026 a vendor, Amplitude, exposed some customer contact data. Coinbase says its own systems weren't breached.

It is also one of America's biggest corporate political spenders. OpenSecrets says it gave $79M to federal races in 2024, mostly via the Fairshake super PAC. Public Citizen has complained that this breaks federal contractor rules. Its COO agreed that a donation to Trump's ballroom was to keep good relations with the White House.
