Do we like Chipotle?
Fast-casual Mexican-style restaurant chain (burritos, bowls), based in Newport Beach, California.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It has a record of labor-law fines and settlements, and we found no strong good deeds in these searches. We'd hold off on backing it.
Chipotle is the burrito chain that grew huge under Brian Niccol. He left for Starbucks in 2024. Scott Boatwright, a former Arby's executive who had been Chipotle's COO since 2017, took over as CEO in November 2024.
More followed. In 2023 Chipotle paid roughly $300,000 in Washington, D.C. after an investigation found over 800 potential child labor violations. It denies wrongdoing there. It also settled in New York City for $20 million over sick leave and scheduling claims.
The company is still expanding. Reports say it plans over 350 new North American restaurants in 2026 and a first Mexico location. We found no strong evidence of big good deeds, so we land in the middle.
