Do we like Chery?

Chinese carmaker (Chery, Omoda, Jaecoo, Exeed, iCar brands) based in Wuhu, Anhui; sells in 100+ countries.

Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, fast-growing exporter with real tech investment, but a trail of recalls and a subsidy dispute. We'd hold off rather than back them with enthusiasm.

Chery is a Wuhu-based carmaker that went public in Hong Kong on 25 September 2025. The IPO raised about US$1.2 billion, the biggest carmaker listing in Hong Kong that year. Chairman Yin Tongyue said the money would go on technology and global expansion.

Today it's pushing hard abroad. The group reported 2.81 million sales in 2025 and has set a 2026 target of 3.2 million. It's launching under its own name in the Netherlands, on top of Omoda and Jaecoo in Europe. Yin told Reuters the aim is to be 'Toyota plus Tesla'.

The dramas are mostly quality ones. In Malaysia an Omoda 5 lost its rear axle assembly, the chairman apologised, and a recall of 8,878 vehicles followed. In Australia, 1,936 Tiggo 4 Hybrids were recalled over an emissions-valve software fault. In China, a preliminary MIIT probe looked at EV subsidy claims, and Chery denied wrongdoing.

So it's a mixed score: ambitious and growing fast, with real tech spending, but the recall record and the subsidy question keep us cautious.
