Do we like Carrefour?
French multinational supermarket and hypermarket chain, based in Massy, France, with stores in many countries.
Our score: 4 out of 10. A giant grocer with a long record of French fines over supplier, pay and advertising practices. We'd hold back, and we couldn't check its recent conduct.
Carrefour is one of Europe's biggest supermarket groups, based in France. Our searches turned up mostly legal trouble, so this score leans on that. We couldn't confirm who runs it now or its recent ownership.
The Paris Commerce Court fined it €1.75m for unfairly pressing suppliers for discounts. Carrefour said it had stopped the practices since February 2016 and wouldn't appeal.
A French court fined it €3.66m for paying about 1,200 staff under the minimum wage, and Carrefour said it would appeal. That's a worker-treatment mark against it.
More recently, the French finance ministry asked a court to fine it over franchise contracts it says were unbalanced in Carrefour's favour. We didn't see the outcome, so we count it as an allegation.
