Do we like Burberry?
British luxury fashion house known for trench coats and check, based in London.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A luxury brand in the middle of a turnaround. The 2018 stock-burning scandal was reversed, but our searches found little recent evidence of real good. We're lukewarm.
Burberry is the London luxury house behind the trench coat and the famous check. Its 2018 annual report showed it had destroyed about £28.6m of unsold goods the year before, £10.4m of that beauty products.
Critics and politicians were furious. Burberry said it only burned trademarked items and captured the energy. Later in 2018 it promised to stop, and to reuse, repair, donate or recycle stock instead. It also dropped real fur.
Now it's in a turnaround under CEO Joshua Schulman. For the year to March 2026, revenue fell 2% to £2.42bn, but adjusted operating profit rose to £160m from £26m, and comparable sales rose 2%. No dividend was paid.
Chair Gerry Murphy is retiring, with Bridgepoint founder William Jackson due to take over in November. Our verdict is middling: the turnaround is real, but we found little to show it does much good beyond selling coats.
