Do we like Bupa?
International health insurer and care provider (health insurance, care homes, clinics, dental), based in London, UK.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. Large and useful healthcare provider, but a A$35m Australian penalty for misleading members and a £3m UK safety fine count against it. We'd hold off.
Bupa is a big international health group run from the UK. Iñaki Ereño has been Group CEO since 1 January 2021, after Evelyn Bourke retired. He joined Bupa back in 2005 and has held a number of leadership roles.
The big drama is in Australia. The ACCC took Bupa to the Federal Court in June 2025. The court ordered A$35m in penalties for unconscionable conduct and false or misleading statements to members, hospitals and medical providers about what policies covered.
To its credit, Bupa cooperated with the ACCC and made joint submissions on liability and the penalty. More than A$14.3m has been paid to parties over more than 4,100 affected claims. The court also imposed a five-year injunction against repeating the conduct.
There's an older UK black mark too. Palmers Law reports Bupa was fined a total of £3m at Ipswich Crown Court over health and safety failings at a care home, after a Health and Safety Executive investigation. Mixed record, so a middling score.
