Do we like Bulla?
Bulla Dairy Foods makes ice cream, cream and dairy products. It is based in Colac, Victoria, Australia.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A long-standing, family-owned regional employer that pays farmers more when it can. It has had a pollution fine and job cuts, and our evidence is thin, so we'd back it with some caution.
Bulla started in 1910 as the Bulla Cream Company in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, set up by Thomas Sloan. It began making ice cream in Colac in 1929. Trade press describes it as a family-owned Australian dairy company. It bought the Choc Top maker Rowena Foods in 2013.
Today it's one of the biggest employers in Colac. The Colac Herald reports an expansion approved by council in 2023. The same site says the company expects about 900 staff across its Colac sites once the new facility is done. An ANZ article from 2025 says it's looking overseas for ice cream growth.
Farm press has run headlines about Bulla raising its milk price for farmers more than once. That is good news for the dairy farmers who supply it.
There are blemishes. SBS ran a story headlined 'Bulla fined over fish-choking cream spill'. Stock & Land ran 'Bulla Dairy Foods cuts 31 jobs amid cost and market pressures'. I couldn't open either article, so I can't give details such as dates, amounts or who fined it.
