Do we like Bose?
Premium headphones, earbuds and speakers maker, based in Framingham, Massachusetts, USA.
Our score: 6 out of 10. Well-made products and an unusual ownership by MIT. Our searches turned up only an old privacy lawsuit, and we found little else to judge. A cautious maybe.
Bose was founded by MIT professor Amar Bose and is based in Framingham, Massachusetts. It's famous for headphones and speakers. It has never been listed on a stock exchange.
The unusual bit is the ownership. Sources say Amar Bose gave MIT the majority of the company's non-voting shares. MIT gets the dividends but doesn't run the business. Lila Snyder has been CEO since September 2020, and Bob Maresca is chairman.
The main drama we found was in 2017. Customer Kyle Zak filed a class action in Chicago. It accused Bose of sending users' listening history from the Bose Connect app to a data firm, Segment. The suit sought more than $5 million. Mondaq reported that the court dismissed the Wiretap Act claims but let the case go on.
We found no regulator fines and no big worker or environmental scandals in our searches, but we also didn't turn up much on those topics. That leaves us at a middling-positive score.
