Do we like Booking.com?
Online travel booking platform for hotels and stays, based in Amsterdam; part of Booking Holdings (US).
Our score: 4 out of 10. Useful and huge, but repeatedly fined by competition regulators and hit by hotel lawsuits and a data incident. We'd hold back.
Booking.com is the giant of online hotel booking. It's run from Amsterdam and owned by US-listed Booking Holdings, whose CEO is Glenn Fogel. Hotels big and small rely on it to find guests.
The big drama is competition law. Spain's competition regulator, the CNMC, fined it €413.2 million in July 2024 over abuse of a dominant position. Spain's National Court paused the fine while the appeal goes on, but Booking has to provide a financial guarantee.
Hungary's competition authority also fined it in 2024 for not fully complying after an earlier infringement ruling. That's a record fine for the regulator, and the company had already been fined in 2020.
Hotels are suing over 'parity clauses', which stopped them undercutting Booking on price. Booking's own 10-Q says German and Dutch claims are ongoing. It also says it told data authorities in April 2026 that third parties could reach some guests' booking info, and that it fixed the problem. We'd be wary.
