Do we like Bonds?

Australian underwear, basics and kidswear brand. It is being sold by Gildan (HanesBrands) to Brett Blundy's BBFIT Investments.

Our score: 5 out of 10. A much-loved Aussie basics brand, but we found little hard evidence of good deeds and it closed its local factories. We'd hold off until the new owner shows its hand.

Bonds is the Aussie undies-and-babywear brand everyone knows. It was owned by Pacific Brands, which became Hanes Australasia after the US firm Hanesbrands bought it. Hanesbrands then merged with Canadian firm Gildan.

In 2009 Pacific Brands, then Bonds' maker, said it would close seven Australian plants and cut about 1,200 jobs, including 233 at Wentworthville in western Sydney. The union said it didn't accept the closures were necessary.

Now the brand is changing hands again. Inside Retail reports retail billionaire Brett Blundy is buying Bonds and Bras N Things in a roughly $700 million deal. It's another owner shuffle for a household name.

We couldn't find solid reporting on its cotton sourcing, overseas factory conditions or tax. A middling score is fair: loved brand, local factory closures in its past, and no strong good-deed record to lift it.
