Do we like Billabong?
Surfwear and boardsport brand founded in Australia; now part of the Boardriders group, which is owned by a US firm.
Our score: 5 out of 10. We couldn't find enough on how Billabong treats workers or the environment, so we can't back it with confidence. It's an old surf name now run by a big brand-licensing owner.
Billabong began as an Australian surf label and was a listed company on the ASX. In 2018 Quiksilver's parent, Boardriders, bought it for about US$298 million, and it stopped trading on the ASX once a court approved the deal.
Boardriders was owned by Oaktree Capital Management after its 2016 bankruptcy restructuring. In 2023 Authentic Brands Group bought it for about US$1.3 billion, as Bloomberg reported. The deal took in Quiksilver, Roxy, RVCA, DC Shoes, Element and the Surf Dive 'n Ski retailer.
Our searches turned up no big scandals or fines for Billabong. They also turned up nothing on its labour, privacy, tax or environmental record. With so little evidence either way, we land in the middle.
