Do we like Bega?
Australian dairy and food maker (Bega cheese, peanut butter, Vegemite); based in Bega, New South Wales.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A big, long-running Aussie dairy company with no fines or court losses turning up in our search. Plant closures and the milk price squeeze on farmers hold the score at a mid-range 6.
Bega started as a dairy co-op in the NSW town of Bega and marked 125 years in 2025. It's now a listed food group that buys milk from farmers and sells cheese and spreads under well-known brands.
In May 2025 Bega announced it would close its Strathmerton cheese plant in northern Victoria by mid-2026 and move work to its Ridge Street site in Bega. It said that would create about 100 jobs in the Bega Valley. That's good news for one town and bad news for another.
Bega also went after Fonterra's Australian consumer and dairy businesses. The ACCC reviewed the proposal because Bega and Fonterra are both big buyers of farmers' raw milk, and it raised concerns about competition and milk prices. We couldn't confirm how that ended.
We found no fine or court case against Bega over how it treats farmers. The milk-price cases in the results were about Murray Goulburn, a different company. Our score is a middling 6.
