Do we like Asus?
Taiwanese maker of laptops, PCs, motherboards, graphics cards, phones and routers, based in Taipei.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A mixed record: decent climate scoring, but past fines for router security and price-fixing, and weak supply-chain results. We'd back it with caution.
Asus is a Taipei-based maker of laptops, motherboards, routers and phones. Jonney Shih has been chairman since 1993 and was CEO until 2007. Since 2019 it has been run by co-CEOs Samson Hu and S.Y. Hsu.
The big security drama came in 2016. The FTC said Asus left its routers with flaws, including a cloud feature that put hundreds of thousands of home networks at risk. Asus settled without admitting wrongdoing, and it faces 20 years of security audits.
There have been other run-ins too. A search summary reports a US$74.4 million fine in 2018 over limiting online discounts in Germany and France, and a $961,633 California Energy Commission settlement in late 2024. We could only see these through search summaries, not the original pages.
On the plus side, it scored an A from CDP on climate in 2024. But a supply-chain environmental assessment gave it only 30.59/100, and the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre keeps a page on the company. That gives a middling 5.
