Do we like Acer?
Taiwanese maker of laptops, desktops, monitors and gaming PCs (Predator), based in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, long-running PC maker with no recent scandals in our searches, but we found little on its environmental or labour record, so we're neutral.
Acer is one of the world's big PC brands, based in Taiwan. Jason Chen has been CEO since 2014 and chairman since 2017, when co-founder George Huang stepped down as chair but stayed on the board. Our latest source on this is from 2017, so check the current leadership.
The best-known privacy trouble: a website breach that went undetected from May 2015 to April 2016 and exposed customers' payment and account data. Acer agreed to pay $115,000 and improve its security, according to Legal Newsline.
There were also consumer-law fights. Customers sued over Vista laptops that allegedly came with less memory than Microsoft recommended, and a 2013 article says that case cost $22.7 million to settle. Those are old stories, and we found nothing newer.
Our verdict is a middle score. We found no recent scandal, but we also found nothing on climate, workers or tax to earn it extra credit, so we can't say we'd happily back them.
