Do we like AAMI?
General insurer selling car, home and other cover to Australians; a brand of Suncorp, based in Brisbane.
Our score: 4 out of 10. A big, familiar insurer with a record of small fines and some claims-handling and debt-collection trouble. We'd be lukewarm and wouldn't pick it for our money.
The regulator record is mostly small stuff. ASIC issued AAMI infringement notices over misleading home insurance ads, which led to $43,200 in penalties. A separate notice over car insurance ads led to a $20,400 payment. ASIC said the fine print was ineffective.
More recently, Suncorp admitted that AAMI referred a disputed motor-accident claim to debt collector ARMA too soon. The ACCC has started Federal Court proceedings against ARMA. Those allegations haven't been proven, and Suncorp has kept ARMA on its panel.
We'd say it's mixed. It does the basic job of insuring people. But the repeated regulator run-ins, and a claims process that has been criticised, keep the score below the middle.
