Do we like Christopher Nolan?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Decent record on the right side of the culture-war noise, marked down only for a contested shoot location and a thin trail of personal good deeds.

Christopher Nolan is the bloke who took the Batman trilogy seriously and then won the big Oscars with Oppenheimer. In September 2025 the Directors Guild of America elected him its president, which says his peers trust him to speak for working directors. He sits at the top of the profession without a pile of off-screen drama following him around.

The one proper stoush before the film came out was about where he shot it. In 2025 the Sahara International Film Festival criticised him for filming four days of The Odyssey in Dakhla, in Western Sahara, which Morocco has controlled since the 1970s. The festival's director said the shoot could help Morocco normalise its occupation, and the Polisario Front accused him of breaching international law. At the time of that report Nolan had not responded, so it sits as an allegation, not a finding.

On the harm check, the record is clean from where we sit. In a Telegraph interview he called the online criticism of the film “irrelevant” and said it comes with the territory, arguing nobody knows what a film is until it's out. Elliot Page, a trans actor he first worked with on Inception, said reuniting with Nolan after his transition felt like having a Nolan experience again. We found no harmful words from Nolan himself, and we did not turn up a pattern of dodgy company in the searches we ran.

The recent noise was mostly aimed at him, not from him. Elon Musk attacked the casting again in May, and the film's trailer copped a pile of dislikes online. Nolan's answer was to shrug it off and keep the casting. Then audiences turned up anyway: a reported $124.5 million in North America and $264.1 million worldwide, with strong reviews.

On the good stuff, the formal record is the guild presidency, which he won by acclamation. We looked for big charity gongs and personal kindness stories and honestly didn't find many, so that's a gap in the file, not a mark against him. What we can say is that he used his clout to back a trans actor's return to a major role without making a fuss about it.

So where does he land? He passes on harm and passes on nice, with the usual caveat that the Western Sahara questions are still open and he hasn't answered them in anything we read. Cheap shots at his casting say more about the people throwing them than about him. If you're after a director who makes big, serious films and doesn't pick fights with minorities, he's a safe bet.
