Do we like Chris Brown?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Nothing harmful turned up and there's real youth and community work, but he rarely speaks publicly on wider issues, so the file is short.

First, the mix-up. This is Chris Brown the Bahamian quarter-miler, known as Fireman, not the singer with the long rap sheet. The sprinter is from Eleuthera and competed at five Olympics, winning four relay medals along the way: one gold, one silver and two bronzes.

The big night was London 2012. He ran the opening leg of the 4x400m relay, a change of order the team made to chase gold, and the Bahamas took its first ever men's Olympic gold in the event. He was also his country's flag bearer at those Games, and he later called it an emotional moment.

On the harm test, we came up empty in the best way. Searches on LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines and climate turned up nothing from him, and nobody he works with raised a flag either. That's partly because he mostly talks about running and coaching, so we can't say much about his wider views.

On the good-person side, we found no court cases, lawsuits or allegations against him in the sources we checked. What we did find is a man giving back: head coach at Clayton State in Georgia, and appointed a sports ambassador for the Bahamas in 2022, where his job includes making sure athletes are looked after and heard.

Nothing new has surfaced on him lately, so there's no fresh stoush to report. Our verdict is a solid yes, held back from the top end only because he keeps a low public profile and there's little on record about his views.
