Do we like Chris Bowen?

Our score: 7 out of 10. Mostly on the right side for LGBTQ+ people, women and the planet, with an early marriage-equality voting record and

Chris Bowen is a long-serving Labor MP for the western Sydney seat of McMahon. When Star Observer wrote about him in 2013 he was a former Treasurer who had just held the seat with 56 per cent of the two-party vote. Today he is the climate and energy minister, which makes him the government's lightning rod on power bills and petrol prices. His official bio page wouldn't load for us, so the early-years picture here is thin.

The messiest chapter is old. In 2019 the ABC obtained ALP invoices that allegedly showed a $100,000 donation to his 2013 campaign, made through a businessman for a Chinese community association reportedly linked to the Chinese Communist Party. Bowen said it was fully declared under the law, and the Coalition's Angus Taylor demanded he answer questions. It reads as a donations-transparency story, not a finding against him.

On the harm check, the votes are mostly good with one wobble. They Vote For You has him consistently voting for extending entitlements to same-sex couples and against a same-sex marriage plebiscite, and generally for transgender rights and protections. It also has him generally voting against same-sex marriage equality. In 2013 Star Observer reported he said he'd vote against marriage legislation because he believed his electorate didn't back it, not because he opposed it personally. An anonymous source alleged a preference deal with the Christian Democrats; Bowen declined to respond and Fred Nile said no deal happened. We found no recent anti-LGBTQ+ words from him.

On the planet he's mostly on the right side. He has consistently voted for a carbon price and, at 99 per cent, for the Paris Agreement. In 2025 he announced a 2035 target of cutting emissions 62 to 70 per cent below 2005 levels, calling it an “ambitious but achievable target”. But the same record has him consistently voting against banning new thermal coal mines and against net zero by 2035. Where you land depends on whether you see that as pragmatism or as too slow.

Recent months have been a grind. As COP31's President of Negotiations he has said Australia and Türkiye are “working together seamlessly”, while Türkiye's environment minister said the two are “not co-presidents”. Before that, the Iran-war fuel crunch saw the Opposition's Dan Tehan call the government's $20 million fuel-saving ad campaign “truly farcical”. Bowen had said the government hadn't counted on any broader impact in its scenario planning.

Fact-checks cut both ways. AAP FactCheck rated false his 2025 claim that the Coalition's pledge to double wind and solar was a “fake policy”, finding the candidates were describing official Coalition policy. He has also been the target of fakes: AAP found a viral claim that he flew to New York for COP31 talks came from a parody account, and that transcripts placed him in Australia.
