Do we like Yoshi?
A character from Super Mario World (1990)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, easily. He's loyal, brave and always up for helping Mario, and he does it with a happy little 'Yoshi!'. The only real cost is the odd lost lunch.
Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World (1990) on the SNES. Mario finds him as a hatchling in an egg block and rides him through Dinosaur Land. Yoshi can eat enemies, flutter-jump over gaps and gain new powers from the shells he swallows. Players loved him straight away.
He got his own starring role in Yoshi's Island (1995), where he and his fellow Yoshis carry Baby Mario through level after level to rescue Baby Luigi. Since then he's been a regular in platformers, kart racing, sports and party games. He's usually Mario's friendly rival, but he never turns on him.
We give him a 9 because he is reliably kind, brave and loyal. He acts as Mario's mount, bodyguard and friend, and he's cheerful throughout. His only faults are a big appetite and a tendency to treat everything as food.
