Do we like Woody?
A character from Toy Story (1995)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's a loyal leader who keeps the whole toy box together, and his worst moments come from fear of being replaced. He's flawed, but he always tries to make things right.
Woody is a vintage pull-string cowboy doll based on the star of a 1950s TV show called Woody's Roundup. In the first Toy Story he is the favourite toy of a boy named Andy Davis and the unofficial leader of the toys in Andy's room. The toys come to life whenever humans aren't looking. Woody keeps order, calms nerves and runs the staff meetings.
His world is shaken when Andy gets a shiny new space ranger action figure, Buzz Lightyear, for his birthday. Woody's jealousy and fear of being replaced are his main flaw. He is proud, anxious and sometimes stubborn. The score stays high because he is also brave, quick-thinking, deeply loyal and willing to admit he was wrong.
Across the sequels, Woody's biggest tests are about loyalty and letting go. In Toy Story 2 he is tempted by a life of fame as a collectible, and he has to choose between that and his friends. In Toy Story 3 he leads the toys out of a bad situation, and by Toy Story 4 he is working out what a toy's purpose is once the kid he loved has grown up. Each time he picks the people he cares about, even when it costs him.
