Do we like Wolverine?

A character from The Incredible Hulk #180–181 / X-Men (1974–present)

Our score: 8 out of 10. Gruff, grumpy and hard to like at first, but he comes through for his team and for kids who need protecting. We'd back him, and we'd let him pick the fight.

Wolverine, also known as Logan or James Howlett, is a mutant with razor-sharp claws, a skeleton reinforced with an indestructible metal, and a healing ability that mends almost any injury. He first appeared in 1974 as a minor foe in an Incredible Hulk story. He then became a breakout member of the X-Men, the team of mutant heroes who protect a world that fears them. He is among Marvel's most popular characters and has been in cartoons, games and films.

He's a rough, solitary fighter who has been used as a weapon, and much of his past is hazy. He hides a lot of hurt under a gruff manner. He drinks, swears and snarls, and he has a short fuse.

Why the score is high: under the claws he has a strong sense of honour. He is fiercely loyal and keeps looking out for the young and the vulnerable, often by bluntly telling them the truth. He loses points for his temper, his stubbornness and his habit of solving problems with violence. Even so, when things get bad he is the one you want next to you.
