Do we like Wednesday Addams?

A character from Wednesday (2022–)

Our score: 8 out of 10. Prickly, rude and utterly loyal. She's a goth detective who won't say she cares, but she'll take on monsters for her friends. We'd back her, from a safe distance.

Wednesday is the teenage daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams. She is blunt, gloomy, psychic and fond of the macabre. After getting expelled from her public high school, she is sent to her parents' old school, Nevermore Academy. It is a boarding school for outcasts, and she is not pleased about it. She soon finds a mystery involving a monster in the woods and a series of killings, and she sets out to solve it.

Reviewers keep coming back to her deadpan exterior hiding real compassion for the people she cares about, including her bubbly werewolf roommate Enid. That is the core of the score. She is rude, stubborn and often reckless, and she treats friendship as an inconvenience. But she is brave, sharp and fair in her own way, and she goes after bullies and predators rather than the innocent. Her pranks sometimes go much too far, which keeps her from a perfect score.

By the end of the first season her investigation has saved the school and exposed a villain hiding in plain sight, someone she and the audience had trusted. It also leaves her an unwilling celebrity. In season two she resents the fame and struggles with failing visions, while a new stalker threatens her and the people around her.
