Do we like Ursula?
A character from The Little Mermaid (1989)
Our score: 1 out of 10. Charming, theatrical and a great singer, but her deals are rigged and she's after a throne. We would enjoy her song and still never sign her contract.
Ursula is the sea witch of Disney's 1989 musical. Triton banished her from his undersea kingdom, and she now lives in a lair with her pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam. She grants wishes to merfolk who are unhappy with their lives. She has a showy, dramatic personality and presents herself as a misunderstood helper.
Her big chance comes when Ariel, Triton's curious young daughter, falls for a human prince and wants to join his world. Ursula offers her a deal, and Ariel pays for it with her voice. The terms are written to make Ariel fail, and Ursula's real target is Ariel's father and his power. She is funny and charismatic, but she is manipulative and predatory throughout, which is why she scores so low.
When the deal is about to run out, Ursula stops bargaining and goes after the throne directly. She takes Triton's trident, grows to enormous size and tries to rule the seas. She is finally defeated when Ariel and Eric fight back.
