Do we like Tony Stark?
A character from Iron Man (Marvel Cinematic Universe) (2008-2019)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, with a raised eyebrow. He's arrogant, reckless and hard work, but he owns his mistakes and keeps showing up when it counts. We'd back him.
Tony Stark begins as a flashy, sarcastic billionaire playboy who runs Stark Industries. The company is a weapons manufacturer, and Tony is a gifted engineer who treats his inventions like toys. In the first Iron Man film he is captured while demonstrating his weapons overseas. He builds a suit of armor to escape, and the experience changes how he sees his work.
Over the films he goes from selfish showman to a man who actually takes responsibility. He builds the Iron Man suits to protect people and then helps pull the Avengers together. He is a loyal friend to Rhodey and Pepper Potts, and he becomes a mentor to Peter Parker. He is still a loudmouth with a huge ego, and he often acts first and thinks later.
His flaws are why the score isn't higher. He hides things from his own team, he can't stop tinkering, and his attempts to make the world safe sometimes make it more dangerous. He is also stubborn enough to split the Avengers when he and Steve Rogers disagree. But he keeps trying to fix what he breaks, and that's why we'd back him.
In Avengers: Endgame he makes the ultimate sacrifice. He uses the Infinity Stones to wipe out Thanos and his army, and it kills him. It's the clearest sign of how far he has come from the man who once cared only about himself.
