Do we like Tony Montana?
A character from Scarface (1983)
Our score: 2 out of 10. Magnetic and fearless, but he's violent, paranoid and loyal only on his own terms. We'd enjoy the ride and wouldn't want to stand next to him.
Tony Montana arrives in Miami in 1980 among the Mariel boatlift refugees, along with his friend Manny Ribera. He is broke and held in a camp, and he's hungry, cocky and sure he deserves more. He takes dirty work for local criminals as his way out.
Tony works his way up quickly because he's ruthless and has no fear. He wants money, power and the woman and lifestyle that go with them. He's loyal to his friends and fiercely protective of his family, but he's also volatile, greedy and quick to violence, so every step up makes him more dangerous.
The score is low because the charm doesn't outweigh the harm. His drive is easy to admire and he has some real loyalty. But the film shows him as a man whose appetites and pride push out everything good. He ends up isolated, paranoid and doomed by his own excess.
His rise ends in a bloody collapse. He is killed in a gunfight at his mansion, and his body falls into a fountain below a statue reading "The World Is Yours."
