Do we like Tommy Shelby?
A character from Peaky Blinders (2013–2022)
Our score: 4 out of 10. Magnetic and loyal to family, but he lies, manipulates and leaves a trail of wreckage. We'd admire him from a safe distance, not back him.
Tommy Shelby comes home to Birmingham after the First World War, scarred by what he saw in the tunnels of France. He leads the Peaky Blinders, a street gang of his brothers and cousins, and wants to take it far beyond small-time crime. The series follows his rise through the 1920s and 1930s, from backstreet betting to politics and international deals.
He is brilliant, patient and always several moves ahead. He is also haunted, prone to dark moods and quick to treat people as pieces on a board. He loves his family, but his schemes often put them at greater risk than any rival does.
That mix is why he scores a 4. He is hugely compelling and has a code of loyalty, but the violence, deceit and cost to those around him outweigh the good. He is a great antihero and a poor person to follow.
