Do we like Tom Nook?

A character from Animal Crossing (2001–present)

Our score: 7 out of 10. A pushy landlord with a big smile, but he's fair, he never charges interest, and he keeps the village running. We'd back him, and keep an eye on the paperwork.

Tom Nook is the businessman of the Animal Crossing series. In most games you arrive in a new town and he is the first to greet you. He runs the general store and the real estate, and in later games he runs Nook Inc.

Your relationship with him starts with a house and a loan. You pay it off by fishing, bug-catching, gathering and selling, and he then offers a bigger home. The loan carries no interest, and he never pressures you with a deadline.

Fans joke that he is a predatory landlord, but what he does in the games is mostly generous. He gives you a start, runs the shops, and runs the island's development. He scores a 7 because he is a good neighbor who also likes to talk about money.
