Do we like The Dude?
A character from The Big Lebowski (1998)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's lazy and a bit of a mess, but he's kind, loyal and easygoing, and he never harms anyone on purpose.
The Dude lives in 1990s Los Angeles. He drinks White Russians, wears a bathrobe, and spends his days bowling with his friends Walter and Donny. He has no job and wants nothing more than a quiet life.
His life is upset when thugs mistake him for a wealthy man with the same name and ruin his favourite rug. He asks the other Lebowski for compensation. That sets off a tangle of kidnapping, double-crossing and strange characters that he never really understands.
He scores well because he's easy to like. He's honest in his own way, doesn't chase money or power, and keeps his cool when everyone around him is shouting. He loses points for his laziness and for how often he goes along with Walter's bad ideas. Even so, he's a good-hearted guy you'd want on your bowling team.
